首先感谢linuxfans.org在Xft2使用方面的工作。
1. 用root 登陆。
su
2. mount windows 目录
mkdir /mnt/windows
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/windows
hda1是c区，hda5是d, hda6是e。如果有第二个硬盘就是hdb1, hdb5, hdb6。注意RH8 不支持NTFS, 如果需要的话，要自己重新编译核心。
3. 将windows下面的 tahoma , verdana 和 Simsun字体拷贝到 RH的字体目录下. 如
cp /mnt/windows/windows/Fonts/tahoma*.* /usr/share/fonts/
cp /mnt/windows/windows/Fonts/verdana*.* /usr/share/fonts/
cp /mnt/windows/windows/Fonts/Simsun.ttc /usr/share/fonts/
4. 下载linuxfans修改过的Xft2.1 for RedHat，改文件名成fans-Xft2.tar.gz:

5. 解压并安装Xft2.1。
#tar xzf fans-Xft.tar.gz
#cd fans-Xft2/i386
#rpm -Uhv --force *rpm

6、修改miniChinput输入器的配置文件：

也可以指定其它的汉字字库，但必须是xlsfonts命令列出的汉字字库。此修改方法对安装美化RH8的RPM包产生的miniChinput不能启动的问题也可以得到解决。
xft.on = YES

xft.anti-aliasing = YES
这才是使用Xft2时miniChinput输入器使用的汉字显示字库。
7. 将首选项->字体里都选Tahoma字体, 除了终端字体选Simsun.

WineInput 是利用Winex在Linux下输入中文的软件。它利用原有的Windows下的输入方法，通过XIM协议输入中文（相应地支持日文和韩文）。从而在不需要改动原输入软件的情况下，充分利用了Microsoft Windows中一些优秀的中文输入方法。

RH9美化后中文字体总体很好，E文还是不行
下载firefly的包升级后，整个系统的显示有了很大的改观，清晰了很多。又将M$的simsun与tahoma引入系统，将/etc/gtk/gtkrc.zh_CN中的字体改为指向tahoma与simsun，再从控制中心的字体选择中将除等宽外的所有字体改为simsun后，一些程序的显示近乎完美，如mozilla与gimp，不论中文、E文、菜单与内容，都可与M$比。但另一些程序与系统对话窗口中自动选择的是仿宋体而不是系统全局设定的simsun，如gaim,效果就差多了，不知有何方法让他们与选用simsun。另外总体感觉上显示的E文很差，不能与中文相比，由于LINUX中大量的文档还是E文的，阅读起来时就没有那些舒服了。不知那位朋友有解决以上两问题的良方。 gaim使用gtk 1.2,所以firefly的美化包对它不起作用，修改gtk 1的字体到/etc/gtk/下面找zh_CN的配置文件。美化后KDE应用子窗口弹出
我用的是RH9,KDE桌面，采用了Firefly的方案美化，但刚开始时E文不佳。根据你上次的提示，我仔细查了原来的/etc/gtk/gtkrc.zh_CN，将缺省字体替换为-microsoft-tahoma-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-p-*-iso8859-1,\-misc-simsun-medium-r-normal-*-*-120-*-*-c-*-koi8-r"；再将qtconfig中缺省选为simsun,打开antialias；最后将控制中心中“字体”antialias与亚像素微调打开。E效果好了很多，基本可以接受。在konsole中还第一次出现了完美的汉字宋体显示。
有一个问题自采用了Firefly的包后一直没有解决，在kppp,kedit,kate等KDE应用程序中一些子窗口，如“工具-》选项”只能首次正常使用，关闭后再不能打开。想再次选择只有重启应用。
不知你有无遇到类似问题。

由于kde-3.1.0中部分应用有弹出的对话框不能开启第二次的问题，今天尝试将RH9中的kde-3.1升级为kde-3.1.4，此问题解决。意外的好处是解决了konsole一直存在的一个影响美观的小问题。以前无论在konsole中选择何种字体，只要是支持中文的，屏幕上只好有中文，总会有些不规则的花斑留下，就象黑板未擦干净一样，尤其是滚动屏幕时更严重。此次升级后，除了汉字间距略有些宽外，此BUG消除！！此时再从Konsole中选择miscfixed字体，中英文的显示都非常完美，屏幕也干净了！！但在gnome-terminal(RH9自带的gnome-2.2)下选用Miscfixed字体，中文只有白框显示，正准备下一个2.4的gnome试试。 如何在默认语言为中文的情况下让console显示英文？console乱码怎么解决？console下面运行setup乱码？
