if you have time, try to install it again. you may want to install the FreeBSD base without X system. After installation, try to install X from the port instead of package, or simply download X sources from XFree86.org and build it yourself. After that, you may need to install some sort of window managers. If you like GNOME, sawfish(sawmill now) could be the better choice. If you want to use KDE, there is a display manager called kde along the KDE distribution. Again, try to compile KDE/GNOME yourself. Using binary packages might get yourself in difficulties easily. Especially you compile those sources on your FreeBSD and hardware, easier to know where goes wrong if there is any problem. be warned, it will take you hours or more to build up X system by yourself. you can compile in backgroug, and play with FreeBSD as well. Believe or not, one learns much much more and faster without using X window systems
