南非亿万富翁、第二位自费国际空间站游客 Mark Shuttleworth 在 2004 年 3 月创办了开发 Ubuntu Linux 的 Canonical 公司。很多人第一次接触 Linux 桌面发行版可能就是收到了他的公司免费寄出的光盘。基于 Debian Linux 的 Ubuntu 过去 20 年基本上是每半年（4 月和 10 月）发布一个新版本，唯一的例外是 2006 年 6 月发布的 Ubuntu 6.06，该版本是 Ubuntu 第一个长期支持版本。今天的 Canonical 已经从桌面扩大到云端，Ubuntu Linux 是最流行的云端操作系统。
